C - Caries / Cavity ( A to Z Challenge April 2014)

You are at your regular 6 monthly dental checkup and your dentist utters the dreaded word, you have a cavity! It is something no one likes to hear, but a condition that is all to common.

What is a Cavity?
Our mouth contains bacteria. The food that we eat often remains behind on our tooth surfaces forming a thin transparent layer called plaque. The bacteria feed on plaque and release acids that eat away the tooth structure. This is the process of tooth decay or caries or cavities. If left untreated, tooth decay can cause pain, infection and tooth loss.

Signs and symptoms of caries:

  • Sensitivity while eating or drinking
  • Toothache
  • Visible discoloured spots on teeth
Prevention and Treatment:
  • Regular 6 monthly visits to the dentist
  • Brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste twice a day
  • Flossing once daily
  • Reduce consumption of sugary snacks and drinks
  • Rinse after every meal and snack
  • If detected early, caries can be treated by simple fillings
  • If left untreated, caries may lead to a root canal or tooth loss

  1. Informative post. I haven't had a cavity yet, but you've reminded me that it's been a while since my last visit to the dentist.
    Happy A-Z!
